Just as the article points out: it never seemed price competitive. Those are some really lousy sales figures though.

It’s feeling like the real NSX is this one:
Like, it’s a daily drivable supercar that has less horsepower than, say, a Ferrari F8 Tributo, but still has great performance and is fun to drive. It uses a higher-performing version of a mainstream engine, and has decent cargo space.

In before NSX name is rebranded as a sport crossover ala eclipse cross. The Acura NSXtreme. 4 seat sporty crossover with FWD and a CVT.

Somebody in corporate’s vanity project. They wanted to show up to the office in a company-built car but a lexus was too poverty spec for them.
But likely it’s just because honda forgot why and how people buy sports cars since they stopped building them. This modern obsession with the super-high end I feel is missing the biggest piece of the pie I.E average joes. I cant even realistically aspire to own a supercar. What happened to the 40-100k segment?

Exactly, plus t he NSX was never $40k. When it debuted in 1991 it stickered at $60k which is $115k in 2020 dollars.

In 2025 no one will sell new cars in Australia after every major company pulls out of the market.
8? That's a really really really bad sales figure. Do you just not have rich idiots over there or do you just have rich idiots with worse taste than we do?

Yeah, this isn’t solely on the NSX. Some of it is on the Aussie car market, and some of it is Honda not knowing how to sell cars to Europeans and Australians. (Seriously, look at their sales on the continent. The UK will probably not look much better after the Swindon plant closes.)
That said, I wish Honda/Acura would make a Supra competitor. Stretch out the S660 a bit, shove the CTR drivetrain in it, call it the S2000 or Prelude or whatever.

To be honest I’m not sure they know how to build and sell cars to anyone anymore. Like how many of the new Honda Passport have you seen? It should be a runaway hit by all accounts but I’ve seen like, what, three? Honda sells a lot of cars but they haven’t done a good job of marketing their more niche products. Like how they totally forgot to sell any current gen Civic coupes.
But yeah a lot of the Japanese brands have shockingly poor sales in Europe. Toyota has the Yaris and not much else. I hadn’t realized Honda was struggling so much in Australia though.

I wonder how low they could price one of these if they stripped out all the widgets and hybrid technology. I also wonder how it would be received. Once stripped down to the essentials, it would be a solid homage to the original.

I was lucky enough to drive one once. I’m not super surprised. I found it both impressive in its capabilities and yet somehow kinda “meh.”
It felt luxurious to me, rather than connected to the driver. A lot of it was the drivetrain, I tried using the paddles to shift, but doing so just felt silly with the weird hybrid powerband.
It honestly wouldn’t be a bad daily, but it just didn’t really provide the thrills its looks promised imho.

I’ve seen quite a few Passports, actually, but nowhere near as many as I do CR-V’s. I think it being so close in price to the RDX has hurt it somewhat.
The Civic coupe was a mercy killing, IMO.

I’ve probably seen less than 10 and I’ve been looking for them. They should be a pretty good competitor to the Subaru Forester but one of those is clearly favored by the buying public.
It didn't HAVE to be though. They simply wouldn't acknowledge it in their advertisements.

I wonder how many people are put off by the black wheels of the base model. I know I’m not a fan. Also, the RDX is only 6 grand more and has a nicer interior.

Yeah, I know Honda sales in general in continental Europe are poor. I think they’ve sold a single digit number of NSXs there this year, and one of those was to Pierre Gasly, who drives for them.

Valid points but I think the black wheels are actually a selling point for many. Usually that treatment is reserved for higher trim models so putting them on the base is interesting.

Can’t be a selling point for that many people if people aren’t buying many of them :P I c an say, for sure, that I see current gen RDXs much more often than Passports. I’ve sat in both at auto shows (haven’t had the pleasure of having either one in at the shop yet) and the interior of the RDX is so much better. When it’s time to get a new daily in a few years I’ll consider the RDX, but not the Passport.

Saw a dealer loaner Passport just now, an Elite (the top trim IIRC)...still with the black wheels. Although I guess they fit the black paint of the rest of it. But isn’t it a bit odd to give the same wheels to the base model and the top trim?

Yeah you expect that to be one of the main ways trims are differentiated. That's too much black right there.

In Australia, I’m not sure. I guess not. I’d have paid more attention if I’d kn ow n they were so rare.
Here’s a post I made where I saw one in Japan in May last year. And you replied! Then I said I don’t think I’d seen one before, so there’s your answer :)
